Ethics & Philosophy
Joseph Indovina and selects from his life’s work, 1965-2020.
My Father, The Futurist.
For as long as I can remember, my father and I shared a vision of the future—one where technology expanded imagination. He was a futurist, an artist, and an architect who lived at the intersection of science fiction and structure, imagination and form. His portfolio spanned everything from sculptural buildings to intricate drawings of impossible machines (to me!) —always asking: what’s next?
He passed away in May 2022—the same month that the first generative image models began to go public.
Since then, continuing that vision has felt like more than a pursuit—it’s become a calling. A way to honor his legacy and evolve myself.
I’ve immersed myself in every generative and creative AI tool I could find, and in 2023, I founded House of Indovina to give that journey a name. As of April 2025, I’ve started documenting it publicly on YouTube (@houseofindovina)—sharing the process, not the polish.
This page is not a portfolio, but it is a field journal, filled with fragments and experiments—each one pushing a little further into what’s possible.
Now, on the general problem with AI
It would be unwise to speak from a place of authority or expertise on Generative AI.
The tools of this new world are in a state of exploration, advancing towards what AI legendary innovator Ray Kurzweil termed the ‘Singularity’—a future point where technological growth becomes so advanced and accelerated that its outcomes are beyond our current understanding and prediction.
Attempting to categorize the expansive and rapidly evolving field of Generative AI is like trying to capture a raindrop within a storm – an endeavor both futile and limiting, as it disregards the myriad of possibilities each drop represents, not to mention the broader dynamics at play. This moment in time, akin to a storm, is neither good nor bad; it simply is.
A graceful approach for an artist these days means taking steps in various directions and acknowledging that progress isn’t always linear. Sometimes the path is up, sometimes it leads nowhere, and sometimes it leads somewhere beyond any imagination.
Yet, while wandering in a storm is poetic, wandering aimlessly without a map can lead to adverse outcomes. Without proper parameters or boundaries, artists, creators, thought leaders – all those in a pursuit of understanding – are prone toward chaos.
How do we navigate a world of Generative AI, where machines seem to outpace our human capabilities?
I remind myself that journey is the destination. That we are but a small part of the timeline of humanity. Albeit a very, very consequential part.
To honor those whose works have contributed to training in models, which is at this stage in time, almost every artist, ever, this means grounding myself with established principles of art, design, literature, film, and a keen awareness of their histories. I allow these OG foundation models to guide us as me pair them with new perspectives and methodologies.
This openness to exploration, paired with an acknowledgment of my occasional uncertainty, forms the basis of my philosophy.
To you, my community—whether you’re a collaborator, supporter, or observer—My goal is to contribute something uniquely vibrant and meaningful to the cultural zeitgeist through this fusion of grounded expertise and exploratory artistry.
As I venture through this landscape, I grapple with questions of abundance in a previously scarce world, the presentation of AI-generated art in an era of digital proliferation, and how to maintain a sense of value in art.
The honest truth? I’m still figuring it out, navigating these new waters together, and inviting you to join me in this journey of discovery.
